weekly music roundup june 30

HELLO TO EVERYONE OUT THERE!!!! I KNOW that there are readers (because of events I’ll get to in the last week section) so fucking HI its time for MUSIC MOTHERFUCKERS that being said it is a slightly lighter week so make sure and get to the ones worth getting to.

TUESDAY JULY 1

Ok I know I’m fucking up right outta the gate here, but Emma Garou (the most talented musician in the twin cities) said that she’s gonna be at the White Squirrel Bar on Tuesday. I’m looking at the events and there’s like two shows? The New Havoline Supremes (I don’t think she’s in this one but like fuck she could be I guess?) and then there’s a residency that’s going to have a bunch of guest musicians on, and if I had to guess she’s probably playing with one or more of them. I wish I had more clarity for you, she’s hard to track down but goddamn she doesn’t disappoint when you do catch her. Anyhoo, I’ve been meaning to get to the White Squirrel for a while (the Luigi to the 331’s Mario) and I would imagine everyone is going to be lovely so probably a fun one to catch!

WEDNESDAY JULY 2

J-Mo is playing a little afternoon show 12-1 at Mears Park, which sounds just fucking idyllic. He’s got a perfect summertime sound, go watch him wiggle his hips, there’s gonna be a foodtruck or something, get sniffed by a strange dog, etc. Unrestrained summertime fun.

THURSDAY JULY 3

Boom check this shit out I’m not completely washed. Here’s an actual verified confirmed Emma sighting. We saw her jazz trio last week and it banged profoundly, so I would imagine that a quartet will fuck at least 33.3% harder. The brewery goes pretty aggressively in on the gnome puns so that’s probably a good sign.

FRIDAY JULY 4

Feel that tingle on the back of your neck? That can only mean one thing! That’s right, it’s this week’s show of the week!!!! Every single one of these bands fuck with the lights on (if you’re trying to get into the local dollpunk scene Kyrie Nova, Critterthing, and Doll Chaser are all absolute fucking must sees, and also Snake World is very fun), it’s another tc trans mutual aid show, it’s at pillar, it’s going to be perfect. If you can make it to one, make it to this one. Buy tickets online if you can, it honestly might sell out.
I feel like I’m missing something because I’m positive something sick is happening on the 5th but maybe there isn’t anything? I dunno if I realize I missed something major I’ll put it up here as a separate post or something.

LAST WEEK ROUNDUP

LAST WEEK FUCKING FUCKED SO FUCKING HARD WOW DAMN.

We went to that jazz show at the Icehouse and Boy Howdy that is such a swanky feeling venue. It just feels so polished and like… I dunno. The food and drink are spendy but they’re actually really good, and the vibes are a little like… NPR kinda but still in a kinda hip way. I love every time I get to go. BUT THE BIG NEWS WAS I saw people I know there and I asked them how they heard about the show and it was FROM THIS VERY BLOG. They’d been meaning to see Emma play but didn’t know where to find her and I had helped! So now I know this is being used by people and I will continue to do it forever, sorry.

The friday show at 7th Street exceeded my already high expectations.

  • EVV was absolutely tremendous, so fucking powerful, I have such a soft spot for bass guitar, and like this was apparently only the 3rd show (and only 3 practices) as the duo so presumably they’re only going to get even better? Staggering to contemplate.

  • Ladies in Wait were such a phenomenal execution of the thing they are. Like, they have their specific sound carved out, you can see exactly what they’re aiming for and they hit it dead center. Cannot believe I haven’t seen them before, will absolutely be going to more shows of theirs!

  • Killed by Kiwis did a cover of my favorite deftones song (My Own Summer) and they killed it. They instigated an inflatable weapons fight during the song. It was cool!

  • Kyrie Nova and the Defiant: I feel like they always give a great performance, but every so often they receive the mandate of heaven and deliver a performance so fucking powerful. This show was a good reminder to me that I probably underrate them a little in my personal hierarchy, they were basically levitating off the stage the whole set. Go see them. They have been good and they continue to be good. (I think they were “the new person I dragged to this show”s favorite of the night). Oh also sorry I misled you I forgot that C only plays with them sometimes.

  • Blue Driver was predictably excellent. They got the crowd hyped up enough to demand an encore, but the newest member only really knew the songs they already played, so they just did another run thru one of the ones they did earlier but louder and funkier. That’s just the kind of group they are. So so so so fucking fun. I still have a ridiculously big crush on Angie the drummer, she’s so hot she makes my teeth sweat.

So anyways yeah go to the fucking shows I recommend, they’re really good. ALSO the Autonomous Zine Fest was so fucking cool and fun and I did actually sell some of my weird fetish magazines and also I dressed so slutty

We drank peppermint iced tea and snuck away to get high and bought/traded for so many amazing zines and flirted with so many adorable gay people (hi dani) and it was just a perfect sunday afternoon-evening. Life is good I think actually. That’s all I’ve got for you today I think, but stay frosty out there and as always come say hi if you see me places
