weekly music roundup july 21

Live music. What is it, really? What does it sound like? Who is it for? Does anyone know?

I’m thrilled to tell you that there are some excellent minds working on that problem as we speak. The next two weeks are a fucking murderers row of some of the absolute fucking best in the business. There are shows that I have been looking forward to for months. Let’s get into it shall we.

JULY 23

You silly little fucks want a weird one? I’ve got a fucking weird one for you. Another Heaven and god damn motherfucking Din Din, at Zhora. The last time I was at Zhora, we wanted to stick around and get food after the show and they seemed reasonably swamped but also like, no one would make eye contact with us, so I’m viewing them with suspicion? But I like the cool lit up red stripe on the ground. I want to love this venue, I will be giving them another chance, maybe I was misreading the situation. Anyways these bands fuck nasty, this show is gonna be bizarre, if you come out to the patio between sets I’ll probably share a joint with you so we can all be ready to receive the bizarre and arcane wisdoms. This show is gonna fucking cook.

Also July 23, Emma (of Watches) is playing some jazz at The Terminal but I can’t find a poster for it. If for whatever reason you don’t want to smoke a joint with me at the weird show, go see her and tell her how amazing she is.

JULY 24

I’m taking this one on faith. I haven’t actually seen Whispered the Rabbit yet. They come highly fucking recommended, however. The excellent and charming Soul Circuits helped set this up, but more importantly, they were very talked up by Debbie, the high priestess of my religion, when we were chatting at 331 about good bands to see. When Debbie tells you to check someone out, you go see them. I’ve been meaning to catch these motherfuckers since early spring. Also, I’ve walked past black forest so many times and never actually been inside, so curiosity alone is motivating me.

JULY 25

Anothernight makes insane noises. This show is free. I still somehow have never gone to White Squirrel, but they feel like St. Paul’s version of 331, so they’re probably pretty rad. Go to this show. Anothernight is playing next week too, but it overlaps with a Watches show at the Amsterdam, so probably knock this one out if you can.

JULY 26th

I don’t even need to ring the bell, right? You all understand that this is the show of the week, correct? You’ve pieced that together? When I heard about this a month and a half ago, I was suspicious. This feels like the exact kind of event someone would invent to specifically trap me, like laying out bait for a wild animal or something. An all day music festival, with a makers market, at Black Hart, with two of my favorite bands, fundraising for a trans collective. Wow, that sounds pretty good, I can’t imagine any way it could get bette- all you can eat hot dogs, dumbass. You cannot stop me from going to this event. If you cut my legs off I’d drag myself there with my hands. Come to this fucking show. “Oh but it’s gonna be hot” grow up. Wear sun screen. Drink gin and tonics or something. Fucks sake. I’ve been looking forward to this like christmas. Come to this goddamn show.

hhh. I apologize for getting worked up.

JULY 27

Dungeon Synth Sundays at Little Tijuana. This is a weird one because it’s not live music, but like, it’s still gonna be chill. I’m probably gonna try for an insane makeup look. Little T has amazing waffle fries. This will be nice and chill probably. I haven’t actually been to one yet, despite loving Little T, but I’m goofed on dungeon synth after that Jenn Taiga show so I am hoping to make an appearance.

Next week has a truly filthy lineup as well. Watches on the 29th at Amsterdam, Anothernight the 30th at Zhora, EVV at the Icehouse on the 31st, Soul Circuits AND Malamiko AND Critterthing AND WATCHES at eagles 34 on the 1st, Admiral Fox at 331 on the 2nd. Jesus fucking christ. But we’ll get there when we get there. Let’s make it through this week first, ok team? I love you all please come see some music this week, it’s unbelievable how many incredible shows are happening and music is always better shared. Come hang out with me it won’t be weird I promise.
